Following any severe rainfall or storm, like the one we experienced last Friday, homeowners should always check several systems in their homes often affected by storms. Below is a simple checklist that you can follow:
1. Debris On The Roof
Debris on the roof can be a reliable indicator when assessing if your roof suffered any damage. Scan your roof for debris, and then scan those areas for missing, slipped, or cracked shingles.
2. Flashing & Gutters
The metal flashing around your chimney can often loosen, bend, or break during storms, which can result in water damage inside your home.
Always check your gutters following any storm. If water does not drain off your roof properly through your gutter system, then the standing water might find a way into your home.
3. Check Basements / Crawl Spaces For Water Pools
Check your basement or crawl space for standing water, or in our case, check the drainage in your basement for water retreating into your home. If you do find standing water in your basement or crawl space, remove it quickly to avoid mold growth, wood rot, or potential structural damage.
